Discover Oahu's "Second City" - Kapolei, a master-planned community featuring modern amenities, diverse housing options, and strategic West Oahu location with excellent growth potential and convenient access to employment centers and recreational opportunities.
James Campbell Legacy (1877-Present): In 1877, Irish businessman James Campbell purchased 41,000 arid acres of ranch land on Oahu's Ewa plain for $95,000. He drilled Hawaii's first artesian well, uncovering a vast pure water reserve that transformed the barren lands into a flourishing sugar plantation. Campbell died on April 21, 1900, with US$3 million to his name, left in trust to his children and their heirs, and extensive property owned by his estate.
Master Planning Era (1950s-1990): The James Campbell Company's efforts began in the 1950s with the development of a master plan for the region, which moved from the drawing board to reality with groundbreaking for the city's urban core in 1990. In 1955 the James Campbell Estate issued a Master Plan detailing the transformation of the Ewa plain into a dynamic economic center. In 1958 the Estate opened the James Campbell Industrial Park, with Standard Oil Company as the first tenant.
Official Development Period (1990-Present): Since ground was broken in 1990, the City of Kapolei has seen strong growth in its office and retail sectors, starting with the openings of the Kapolei Shopping Center in 1992, and the Campbell Square complex of office buildings in 1993. In the 1980s, construction began on the Ko O'lina Resort on former Campbell Estate land. Major residential projects, notably the Villages of Kapolei, 'Ewa by Gentry and Ocean Pointe, also began on former estate land. In the 1990s, ground was broken on the City of Kapolei and Kapolei Business Park.
Contemporary Growth (2000-Present): Since the year 2000, the Kapolei region has continued to grow with the opening of the University of Hawai'i at West O'ahu on land donated by the Estate. Today, the population of the Kapolei region exceeds 116,000.
Kapolei sits on the Ewa Plain in West Oahu, strategically positioned as the region's primary urban center. Kapolei is driving distance to downtown Honolulu via the H-1 freeway. Without traffic, the trip from Kapolei to downtown Honolulu might take a little more than 30 minutes; however, traffic on the freeway can double or triple that time.
